| O'Brien in winning form in Limerick |
By Tommy Campbell Irish Independent, Evening Herald, Sunday Independent Banteers' Paidi O'Brien who recently returned from his exploits with the An Post Sean Kelly team, whom he was with for a number of years, has recorded his first win of his season in his new colours of SportActive, Sioen , Engraveit, AnChuirt Hotel. Earlier today he displayed all those qualities of top class racing abroad when along with a group of ten they escaped from the main pack, going through Ballyneety on the outskirts of Limerick.
Admittedly only 10kms of racing was covered with a further 90kms to go. But, this did not deter the escapees who pressed ahead. Eventually it was left to O'Brien, Timmy Barry of the Edge CC in Cork, Eoin Cummins of Blarney CC and Rory Wyley of Carrick Wheelers and the current President of Cycling Ireland in the closing kilometers to go head to head. The four jockeyed for position to launch a sprint for victory, but it was O'Brien who came through attacking at the 3 km marker opening a 30 second gap to record his first win of the season and who knows it may not be the last time that he'll savour victory this year.
Hot on their heels at the finish was Robin Kelly of Comeragh CC and David Brennan of TFH/Castlebar CC. At the head of the bunch was Martin O'Loughlin with Daniel Clifford formerly of the Killorglin Credit Union CC and now with SportActive in eighth place. |
